Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Often described as the best one-day hike in New Zealand, and by far the most popular, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a challenging, rugged alpine trek with climbs to 1900m.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing track passes over varied and spectacular volcanic terrain.

In the presence of active volcanoes you can experience some of Tongariro National Park’s most special gifts of nature. Lava flows, an active crater, steam vents, emerald-coloured lakes, a cold mountain spring and the most magnificent views make this a hike to remember.

When completing the hike, you need to be prepared for changeable alpine weather, with tramping boots, windproof and rainproof jacket, trousers, and warm layers, warm hat and gloves. Cotton clothing is not suitable in alpine conditions (this includes jeans). Make sure to bring some food and plenty of drinking water. There are no shops along the way.

A full day (7-8 hours including rest stops) is required to complete the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The track can also be walked in the reverse direction, but please note that this option requires more climbing and it is wise to allow an extra hour to compensate.
