Winter Sports in Tongariro National Park
When it snows, the Mount Ruapehu and Tongariro National Park area is a true winter sports paradise.
Turoa is the highest ski area in New Zealand measuring about 500 hectares of patrolled terrain and offers snow excitement for the whole family, with an excellent variety of terrain to suit all levels. Explore 30 groomed trails and a massive variety of off-piste areas for advanced skiers and boarders. Turoa also has Australasia’s longest vertical… at 722m!
Close by is Whakapapa ski field, on the western slopes of Ruapehu. Whakapapa is New Zealand’s largest developed ski field, with 550 hectares of runs, providing excellent skiing and boarding for all levels. Whakapapa offers 3 main off-piste areas here that strong skiers and riders will surely appreciate.
Turoa and Whakapapa Ski fields offer joint winter sport passes. Delight in exploring both slopes in one day! Ohakune Township provides top class winter sport shops and equipment hire.
